Jawwad at the first PASHA Tech Crunch Event

Jawwad Farid

My name is Jawwad Ahmed Farid and I have a talent for founding companies that run into trouble. Twelve years ago, in March 1998 I bade farewell to a regular pay check to walk on a path that has been nothing but interesting. I think starting, founding and running a business is a form of extreme sport that can be just as dangerous and breath taking as it is rewarding. It is not meant for the faint hearted but the only way you can find out your suitability to this line of work is to give it a shot.

This blog was put together to collate everything I have written or taught about this subject in the last decade. Blog posts, excerpts, articles, presentations and power points. And every now and then possibly even a video.

As a companion to the Entrepreneurial crash course here, I also run the Learning Corporate Finance blog. While Startup Insights is more focused on all things entrepreneurial, the corporate finance blog does the same thing for numbers (financials, projections, valuations, multiples & credit).

I was introduced to Finance when I built my first financial model in Lotus 123 at the tender age of 14 years.  Since then, spread sheets, financial models and financial analysis have been the main stay of my work.  For a more interesting history of all the mean and nasty thing I have been up to take a look at me and myself as well as my blog that acts as my primary ranting and blood pressure control mechanism.

Over the last 17 years, I have worked as an actuary, built and implemented insurance, risk  and treasury systems as part of my day job, spent all of four months at Goldman in London, picked up an MBA from Columbia Business School, valued derivative contracts and taught in Karachi, Dubai and Singapore on the Alchemy, Consultnomics and S P Jain platforms. I have also served as the Treasurer and CEC member of PASHA, the Pakistani Technology industry association, as a Judge for the PASHA ICT Awards in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 , as well as for the Asia Pacific ICT Awards in Macau, Singapore and Jakarta.

Alchemy , the firm I run has won multiple industry awards including the PASHA ICT Award for best financial application in 2005, the APICTA Asia Pacific Finalist in 2006 and the MIT BAP runners up in 2007.
